Friday Meeting with the Team

I went to Northeast Friday to meet with all of Lance's therapists. This was my opportunity to hear about the programs they feel will best meet his needs at this time. I decided that this was a good time for me to give them some insight about Lance and what makes him unique. At this moment they only know what they see and he is not able to fully express himself so I wanted to enlighten them to what makes him special. I told them he is a man with many interest eclectic in his taste for music, art, friends, food and women. That his creativity was evident in everything he did, his practice and environment had his distinctive touch and style.

It was evident to me that they already knew what I was talking about. His physical therapist told me that he was very impressed with the progress Lance has made since he arrived at Northeast 2 weeks ago. He said he seemed very sad and could only sustain about 10 mins a day of PT but quickly increased his sessions and is now doing 165 mins a day. He said his determination is evident and they are very impressed with his desire to work hard. The speech therapist said his deficits are very challenging but his desire to speak is so strong that she feels he will improve in time. She said with all the physical and emotional challenges he has to overcome he still has a formidable presence. His occupational therapist was not available for this meeting but they told me she has a real connection with Lance. She will teach him to be more independent and handle his daily routines.

I was impressed with the genuine interest they showed in getting to know more about what he likes and dislikes and their openness to incorporating some alternative therapies into his program which I know Lance would appreciate.

He has a very full schedule from Monday thru Thursday and Friday through Sunday he is really on his own. If you can find the time to visit please go to the nurses station outside his room and ask for the "Schedule of Daily Activities" it is by the hour and some really nice events take place. It's a great opportunity to take Lance out of his room and have some fun.

Somehow I am not surprised that Lance's larger-than-life presence is evident despite his not being able to talk. I'm happy to know he is in good hands and that he's becoming more motivated in his recovery. With the right environment and guidance, his strong will and positive attitude, and the love and support of his friends and family . . . I feel confident that Lance can overcome the biggest of challenges.
