I am so glad that I went to visit Lance! Definitely a different situation than St. Vincent's. The place is brighter and more spacious. But he does seem to miss something! Is it that his friends visited and that he had more contact with hospital staff? All so hard to know. But he did greet me warmly from the wheelchair, all dressed in shorts and a T-Shirt.
Lance did take me around the facility. At one point we were by the entrance and he wanted to go outdoors. As I approached the exit I was informed that I needed a pass. Imagine the sight - me pushing Lance in his wheel chair. I am all of 5 feet! I don't know where they thought I would be going with him! He did not seem to want to go out in the back. It was quite smokey - from the smokers. It was not easy seeing all these people with severe brain injuries and I can only imagine that this must be difficult for Lance.
Lance did direct me where to go. We would have the choice of going right or left and I would ask him and he indicated the direction he wanted. Once we returned to his room we played tic tac toe. I suppose you might know how clever he is at it. I left an acupuncture tote bag with him and he seemed to be able to say most of the letters on the bag and then say the word "acupuncture." He seemed to like the wind up ear and was quite interested in the picture of the Fool and looked at it and said "Tarot." It is from the tarot deck.
Singing.... the songs we sang were a couple of Beatles' songs: "We all live in a yellow submarine" and "Michelle" and then from the Wizard of Oz... "If I only had a...." - he filled it in with dream and not brain.
The acupuncture was fine and I think he might like it more often.
Ok that's it for now...wendy
